Technology Calculators

Convert file size and connection throughput to a plain-English theoretical download time.

Internet plans commonly quote megabits per second while files use megabytes or gigabytes, so the units must be converted before dividing size by speed. The estimate assumes sustained throughput; Wi-Fi conditions, congestion, server limits and protocol overhead can make the real download take longer.

How to use these calculators well

  • Distinguish megabits per second from megabytes per second before comparing values.
  • Use a measured sustained speed when available rather than only the plan maximum.
  • Allow separately for Wi-Fi, congestion, server limits and protocol overhead.
