Calculation breakdown
- Total return
- ($150,000.00 − $100,000.00) ÷ $100,000.00 × 100 = 50%
- CAGR
- (($150,000.00 ÷ $100,000.00)^(1/5) − 1) × 100 = 8.45%
Assumptions
- This calculator does not account for any additional contributions during the period.
- CAGR (compound annual growth rate) smooths returns evenly over the holding period.
How this calculator works
Enter your initial and final investment values and the holding period to see your total profit, total return percentage and compound annual growth rate (CAGR), the standard way to compare investments held for different lengths of time.
Frequently asked questions
What is CAGR?
Compound annual growth rate (CAGR) smooths a total return over the holding period into an equivalent constant annual rate, making it easier to compare investments.
Does this include dividends or distributions?
Only if you include them in your final value — enter the total value including any reinvested income for an accurate return.
Why is my CAGR lower than my total return?
CAGR is annualised, so for holding periods longer than one year it will always be lower than the simple total return percentage.
