How this calculator works
This calculator adds up to eight numbers and divides by how many non-blank values you enter to find the arithmetic mean. Leave fields at zero if you have fewer than eight values, and the calculator only counts entries you have changed from blank.
Frequently asked questions
What happens if I don't use all eight fields?
Any field left at its default of zero is still counted unless you explicitly note it; for the most accurate average, enter your real values in the first fields and leave any unused ones at zero, and the note below the result explains how zero values are treated.
Can I enter negative numbers?
Yes, negative numbers are included in the average calculation as normal.
What's the difference between mean, median and mode?
The mean is the sum divided by the count, the median is the middle value when sorted, and the mode is the most frequently occurring value — see our separate calculators for those.
