GST calculations for Australian small business
A GST calculator can separate the tax component from a price, but correct business treatment also depends on registration, whether a sale is taxable and whether credits can be claimed.

Inclusive and exclusive prices use different operations
For a standard taxable sale at the current 10% rate, adding GST to a GST-exclusive price multiplies the price by 1.10. Separating GST from a GST-inclusive price divides the total by 11 to find the GST component. Simply taking 10% of an inclusive total overstates the GST.
A calculator can perform that arithmetic, but it does not decide whether a particular supply is taxable, GST-free or input taxed. Classification should be checked against ATO guidance or professional advice where the treatment is uncertain.
Registration changes the workflow
A business that is registered or required to register generally needs to include GST in taxable sales, issue appropriate tax invoices and report through activity statements. Turnover tests, special rules and voluntary registration can affect whether registration applies.
The GST collected from customers should be tracked as an amount owed through the tax system rather than treated as available profit. Separating it into a dedicated reserve can reduce the risk of a cash shortage when an activity statement is due.
Estimate net GST, not only sales GST
An activity-statement estimate commonly starts with GST collected on taxable sales and subtracts eligible GST credits on business purchases. Eligibility, documentation and private-use adjustments matter. A simple calculator cannot determine whether every purchase credit is claimable.
- Record whether each amount is GST-inclusive or GST-exclusive.
- Keep valid tax invoices and reconcile them to bookkeeping records.
- Separate GST from income and expense amounts consistently.
- Check current registration and reporting obligations with the ATO.
Use calculator results as a reconciliation aid
Use the result to check an invoice or estimate a reserve, then reconcile it with the accounting system and source documents. Differences can reveal mixed tax treatments, rounding, omitted transactions or private-use adjustments that need investigation before lodgement.
