Calculation breakdown

Paid hours
Paid hours = (finish time − start time) − unpaid break
Gross pay
Gross pay = paid hours × hourly rate

Worked example

A shift from 9:00am to 5:30pm with a 30-minute unpaid break gives 8 paid hours, or $256 gross at a $32 hourly rate.

Assumptions

  • Enter finish time past 24 for a shift crossing midnight (e.g. 25.5 for 1:30am).
  • Excludes any penalty rates or overtime loadings.

How this calculator works

Enter your start time, finish time and any unpaid break to calculate hours worked for a shift, then apply your hourly rate to see gross pay for that entry. Repeat across shifts to build up a full timesheet total.

Frequently asked questions

How do I handle a shift that crosses midnight?

Enter finish time as a 24-hour value past midnight (for example 25:30 for 1:30am) so the duration calculates correctly.

Does this deduct my unpaid break automatically?

Yes, the unpaid break minutes you enter are subtracted from the raw start-to-finish duration.

Can I use this for fortnightly timesheets?

Calculate each shift separately and add the totals, or use the Total Employment Cost calculator for broader period totals.

Actual entitlements can depend on your award, enterprise agreement, contract, employment status and individual circumstances.
