Worked example

For 45 m² of wall, a 10 m × 530 mm roll, 2.4 m drop and 320 mm repeat yields 3 drops per roll and needs 13 rolls with 10% allowance.

Assumptions

  • Wall area is measured after chosen opening deductions.

How this calculator works

Patterned wallpaper is constrained by full vertical drops rather than roll area alone. This calculator rounds the cut length to the next complete pattern repeat, finds how many usable drops fit on each roll, and then allows for trimming and layout losses before rounding to whole rolls.

Frequently asked questions

Why does pattern repeat increase the roll count?

Every drop must align with the neighbouring pattern, so part of the roll can be consumed when each cut is advanced to the next repeat.

Should doors and windows be removed from wall area?

Deduct large openings if desired, but retain enough allowance for short pieces above openings, pattern matching and damaged lengths.

Can rolls from different batches look different?

Yes. Order the required rolls from one dye lot where possible and follow the supplier's inspection and hanging instructions.
